It was first known as Yunnan National Institute. On April 16, 2003, this institute was renamed as Yunnan National University. Yunnan Minzu University(YMU) is a comprehensive higher education institution for all Chinese ethnic groups. From beginning to its establishment, this university received 20000 students and scholars, over 80 countries, to study academic exchange and scientific research.  In 1999, 2005 and 2009, Yunnan Minzu University was three times awarded the honor of “National Model Institution of Ethnic Unity and Progress” by the State Council, in 2016 won the title of “National Demonstration Unit of Building Ethnic Unity and Progress.”. Yunnan Minzu University gives high importance to established international cooperation and exchanges relationship. The university starts recruiting international students from 1981. More than 20,000 visitors have visited Yunnan Minzu University from more than 80 universities over 20 countries or regions including the United States of America, the Kingdom of Norway, Japan, and South Korea.
